What tyres will the teams and drivers have for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix?

Formula 1 moves on from opening rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend – and Pirelli have confirmed the tyres that will be in play.

F1’s official tyre supplier will bring the C3, C4 and C5 compounds to the Albert Park venue, the softest from their range, marking the first time the C5 has been seen this season.

Drivers will get two sets of the hard tyre (marked white), three sets of the medium tyre (marked yellow), and eight sets of the soft tyre (marked red), as well as the green intermediate tyre and the blue full wets, should they be required (which they might).

The decision to go with a softer selection was taken after analysing last year’s race, which saw 10 drivers use the C2 compound for 47 of the 58 laps, and three drivers run it for more than 50 laps.

While the C5 remains unaltered from 2023, it is the compound that has been used the least on the current generation of F1 cars – only 140 kilometres being completed on it during pre-season testing in February.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was the only driver to complete a true long run with it at the Bahrain International Circuit, with Williams, Ferrari and Kick Sauber conducting limited running, meaning the C5 remains something of an unknown.
