WATCH: Ride onboard with Sainz as he sets the quickest time of the pre-season test so far for Ferrari
Carlos Sainz topped the timing sheets on Day 2 for Ferrari, the Spaniard taking over the cockpit in the afternoon session from his team mate. Sainz set the fastest time of testing so far with a 1m 29.921s, which was just over two tenths shy of last year’s pole time at this track.
The day didn’t go entirely to plan for Ferrari, with the team forced to change the floor on the SF-24 after Charles Leclerc ran over a piece of loose drain cover in the morning session. But when Sainz got going in the afternoon, he wasted no time in going quickest of all on both the medium and then soft tyre.
He wound up nearly eight tenths clear of Sergio Perez in second, and over a second ahead of Lewis Hamilton in third. It was a solid day’s work for Sainz, who completed 84 laps to boot. But while that Ferrari looks quick, Red Bull didn’t run the C4 tyre and thus haven’t unleashed their true pace just yet.
