WATCH: Ride onboard with Piastri for his game-changing pole position lap for Qatar GP
Oscar Piastri secured what could be an all-important pole position to keep himself in the title fight in Qatar.
Oscar Piastri denied Standings leader Lando Norris a chance to start the Qatar Grand Prix from pole position as he delivered a spectacular lap on his final attempt, beating both his McLaren team mate and Max Verstappen.
After taking a commanding victory in the earlier Sprint, Piastri used the momentum to shoot to the top of the timesheets with a time of 1m 19.387s, nearly six-tenths faster than the lap that earned him Sprint pole position on Friday.
He looked in control throughout the session, but it was Norris who took provisional pole after the first runs of Q3. However, on his second attempt, a snap of understeer saw him abandon the lap, giving Piastri free rein to put together an even faster lap.
With the Australian aiming for a clean sweep in Qatar, a victory would take the title fight into the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
