WATCH: Relive the action from the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix, as Alonso shares memories of epic Schumacher battle
Fernando Alonso returns to Imola this weekend, the scene of one of the great drives of his career after the Spanish racer was able to hold off Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher in the closing laps to take victory at the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix.
Alonso overtook McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, who was slowing down due to a driveshaft issue that would force him to retire, to take the lead of the Grand Prix. The Renault driver then held off the attack of the much quicker Ferrari driven by Schumacher, who had started the race in P13, to seal his third victory in a row.
Jenson Button finished in third place after being unfortunately held up by the Williams of Mark Webber, which allowed Schumacher to sneak past the Brit into second. However, Button and team mate Takuma Sato where later disqualified from the race, which meant that McLaren’s Alexander Wurz, who replaced the injured Juan Pablo Montoya for the race, was awarded the last podium place.
