ROAD TO F1: Ferrari junior Ilott takes second F2 pole of season as Sargeant takes top spot in F3

Formula 2 will have a British driver on pole at Silverstone, as Ferrari junior Callum Ilott became the Championship’s first repeat polesitter of the season, beating Renault Academy driver Christian Lundgaard by just one tenth of a second. While in F3, Logan Sargeant scored his second successive pole position, just 0.2s ahead of Red Bull protégé Liam Lawson.

Lundgaard had actually led the majority of the session, but Ilott found a turn of pace in the second and third sectors of Silverstone to leap from 10th to first in the final minutes.

His route to pole was then made a whole lot easier as Sean Gelael spun on track and brought out a yellow flag in sector 2, which ruined almost everyone else’s final push lap.

Championship leader Robert Shwartzman’s qualifying struggles continued in Round 5, as the Ferrari junior limped to his third-consecutive finish outside of the top 10. The PREMA racer will start 11th in the Feature Race on Saturday at 1545 local time.

In F3, PREMA racer Sargeant took control of the session early doors and never looked like releasing his grip on pole position. His primary challenger in the early stages was his team mate Oscar Piastri, but the Renault junior suffered from mechanical issues and was forced to retire from the session ahead of the second stint.

Lawson managed to put together a strong lap towards the end of qualifying, but fell two tenths short of Sargeant and settled for a second successive front row start.

Silverstone will have a British representative in the top three, with Jake Hughes starting from third on the grid in Race 2 on Saturday, at 0925 local time.
