MUST-SEE: Watch Norris’s fancy footwork as Pedal Cam returns to F1 for the first time in 22 years

For the first time in 22 years, a Pedal Cam has featured in an F1 weekend broadcast, showing off the footwork of McLaren’s Lando Norris as he steered his McLaren MCL36 around the fast and flowing Silverstone circuit during Free Practice 1 for the British Grand Prix.

The Pedal Cam was last used way back at the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix, affixed to Pedro de la Rosa’s Arrows – while it was also famously used on Ukyo Katayama’s Tyrrell at the 1993 Japanese Grand Prix.

And while it was Norris who got the nod to try out the camera angle this weekend, the ambition is to roll it out across the grid in races to come once the technology has been assessed and perfected.

“This is another in a line of innovations we have introduced to our broadcasts that bring fans closer to the action,” said Dean Locke, Director of Broadcast & Media at Formula 1. “F1 drivers are completing a number of complex tasks simultaneously at speeds of up to 200mph during a race, and this camera angle – alongside innovations such as visor cam – will help our fans to understand the challenges of being in the cockpit.

“Having this on Lando’s car at his home race is something we are very excited about and we hope his fans, and all fans at Silverstone, this weekend enjoy the unique insight.”
