Injured F2 racer Correa to race in Chinese Virtual Grand Prix for Alfa Romeo

F2 racer Juan Manuel Correa is set to make his first official outing with the Alfa Romeo squad since his life-altering crash at Spa in August of last year, with the Ecuadorian-American driver poised to return to the virtual cockpit for the Swiss-based team at this weekend’s Chinese Virtual Grand Prix.

Just days after testing one of the team’s F1 cars for the first time, Sauber Junior driver Correa was caught up in a multi-car crash at the Formula 2 Feature Race at Spa last year, which resulted in the tragic death of Anthoine Hubert, while Correa was left with a spinal injury and extensive damage to his legs, which required major surgery and from which he is still recovering.

However, after setting up a Twitch account during the coronavirus lockdown, Correa was able to compete in a number of esports events, before it was announced that he would partner up with Alfa Romeo F1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi for the Chinese Virtual Grand Prix on Sunday, April 19.

“So excited to be back in the cockpit for @alfaromeoracing this Sunday,” tweeted Correa, who will be joined in the race by F1 drivers, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, Red Bull’s Alex Albon, McLaren’s Lando Norris and Williams pairing George Russell and Nicholas Latifi.

The Chinese Virtual Grand Prix will take place at 1700 UTC on Sunday, April 19 – with the broadcast available on F1.com, as well as the official Formula 1 YouTube, Twitch, Weibo and Facebook channels.
