HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from the Japanese GP as Antonelli bounces back from poor start to take victory
Kimi Antonelli claimed his second consecutive win for Mercedes after dropping to sixth on the opening lap in Japan.
Kimi Antonelli recovered from a lacklustre start to win the Japanese Grand Prix by nearly 14s from Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc, executing a commanding drive to secure his second victory of the season.
The Mercedes pair endured a frustrating opening lap as Antonelli and George Russell were slow to get away from the front row, allowing McLaren driver Piastri to take the lead while Leclerc similarly gained two positions.
With the Italian driver relegated to sixth place, Piastri continued to control the field despite numerous challenges from Russell, who ultimately lost out by pitting for fresh tyres just before the Safety Car was deployed for Ollie Bearman’s unfortunate crash.
Contrastingly, Antonelli saved time in the slowed conditions and reclaimed his lead at the front, building up a significant gap over Piastri following the restart. His Silver Arrows team mate, meanwhile, missed out on a podium for the first time in 2026 as he was unable to find a permanent way past Leclerc in the closing laps.
In McLaren's strongest race of the season so far, Lando Norris came out on top in his battle with Lewis Hamilton for fifth place, and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly held off Max Verstappen to keep P7 over the line. Further behind, Liam Lawson and Esteban Ocon rounded out the points finishers for Round 3.
