Formula 1 has landed in Monte Carlo for one of the most prestigious races on the motorsport calendar, the Monaco Grand Prix, with drivers and teams getting their weekend preparations under way during FP1.
After a hard-fought win for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in Imola, where he was pushed all the way by McLaren rival Lando Norris, there is plenty of intrigue over who will set the pace on the tight, twisty street circuit.
FP1: Hamilton leads Piastri and Russell during interrupted opening practice in Monaco
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes ended the opening session at the top of the timesheets, having hit the track on soft tyres just before Kick Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu brought out the red flags by hitting the wall at the exit of the Sainte Devote corner.
There was also trouble for reigning world champion Verstappen, who brushed the barriers on several occasions as he struggled to find a comfortable balance, though both the Dutchman and the Ferraris only used medium tyres for their fastest laps.
