Valtteri Bottas topped every single practice session this weekend at Mugello, but when it came to the crunch Lewis Hamilton did what Lewis Hamilton does and pipped him to pole position when it really mattered.

The Finn had been in superb form ahead of the Tuscan Grand Prix, with Hamilton admitting he simply wasn't dirivng well enough after Friday's sessions. But on Saturday afternoon the six-time champ dug out the performance he needed to seal his 95th pole position – though Bottas was left cursing Esteban Ocon, whose spin late in Q3 ruined his chances of putting in a better lap time and claiming pole for himself.

Max Verstappen took his customary third place on the grid, with his Red Bull team mate Alex Albon in fourth, and a rather surprised Charles Leclerc fifth ahead of Ferrari's 1000th Grand Prix.
