HIGHLIGHTS: Catch the qualifying action from Austin as Norris takes spectacular pole while Russell crashes out
With the battle at the top continuing to heat up, Lando Norris bounced back from his P3 finish in the Sprint to claim a remarkable pole position just 0.031s ahead of Max Verstappen.
The McLaren driver was forced to settle for his initial timed lap in Q3 after the final attempts were cut short by yellow flags brought out by George Russell dramatically ending his day in the barriers.
However, that first lap of 1m 32.330s was fast enough for Norris to take his sixth pole of the season as he edged out Verstappen and the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, with four-tenths separating the top four.
Elsewhere, it was a disastrous session for Lewis Hamilton, whose record of qualifying in the top five at every Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas ended after he was knocked out in P19.
