Ferrari confirm name for new F1 car as launch date approaches

Ferrari have confirmed that their upcoming F1 challenger will be called the SF-24.

By choosing this name, the Italian outfit are continuing a recent tradition, and one that spans almost the entire turbo-hybrid era, with the SF standing for Scuderia Ferrari, followed by the number of the current year.

The formula was first used on the 2015-specification SF15-T, F1’s second turbo-hybrid season, and the only exception since then came in 2022, when the F1-75 name celebrated the manufacturer’s 75th birthday.

Ferrari will present the SF-24 to the world on February 13, just after Aston Martin and just before Mercedes, McLaren and reigning world champions Red Bull in a packed car launch schedule.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will continue as team mates for a fourth season, with the Monegasque having recently signed a contract extension to keep him onboard beyond 2024.

After finishing third in the 2023 constructors’ standings, Ferrari will be looking to kick on and return to the sharp end on a more regular basis this year, with the Maranello operation pushing for their first world title since the 2008 campaign.
