HIGHLIGHTS: Watch all the action as Hamilton seals pole in thrilling wet qualifying session
The dark clouds above the Red Bull Ring were heavy and foreboding on Saturday morning, and when it did start raining, it did so with enough intensity to see the morning practice session cancelled.
It was touch and go whether qualifying would be able to start at all, but after a 40 minute delay to let another particularly heavy burst of rain clear, the session went live and the drivers streamed out on to the track, desperate to get a lap in early lest the rain intensify and the red flag be thrown.
The rain did indeed step up a gear, but remarkably the drivers kept the show on the road and we got through all three segments of qualifying, and saw some incredibly skillful driving right up and down the field – none more so than from Lewis Hamilton who traded blows with Max Verstappen at the top of the timesheets before sealing pole with a lap that was an incredible 1.2s quicker than the Red Bull man.
Click the video above to watch all the best action from what was one of the most thrilling qualifying sessions Formula 1 has staged for some time.
