Max Verstappen made it four pole positions in a row as he secured top spot on the grid for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix. In a dramatic qualifying session – that featured plenty of deleted lap times – Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc came agonisingly close to taking pole himself, just 0.048 seconds away in second.
Leclerc’s team mate Carlos Sainz rounded out the top three on the grid with an admirable lap of his own. But the headline of the session was Verstappen’s Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez, who failed to advance to Q3 for the fourth time in succession – his three deleted lap times in Q2 leaving him P15.

It was also a session to forget for Mercedes’ George Russell, who was knocked out in Q2 and will start P11 for the race on Sunday.
On the flip side, Lando Norris had a hugely positive day in his upgraded McLaren as he shone throughout. A P4 start for the race was the reward for his efforts, while Williams’ Alex Albon backed up his impressive outing in Canada with another Q3 appearance, starting in P10.
